Purpose of Site - This site has tracked the performance of stock buy recommendations made on Jim Cramer’s Mad Money TV show since July 28, 2005. It arranges his comments (from our notes) & the stocks’ performance in a format that allows for detailed analysis.
The site is updated after each new Mad Money show. Each update is shown in the yellow Site Update box on the home page. Clicking on the symbols there takes the user directly to the performance history of each recommendation. The Site Update box is also shown at the bottom of many pages on the site for easy navigation. A free email subscription is available to users who wish to be notified of each update. Clicking on any symbol in the email update takes you directly to the performance history of that stock on the site.
New Recommendations - In the great majority of cases, new recommendations are made during key show segments other than the “Lightning Round” or “Sudden Death” where Cramer responds to questions. An exception is made if, during these later segments, Cramer takes extra time to favorably elaborate on a new stock and/or sets a specific price target that is significantly higher than the current price.
IPO Note: These are recommended with buy price limits (e.g., don’t pay more than “X”) & therefore cannot be tracked because of an indeterminate beginning price. However, these recommendations are noted in “Cramer’s Calls”.
Major Buy Reiterations - At times, Cramer will use a key segment to strongly reiterate an ongoing recommendation or, on another segment, will set a new price target for it. These Major Buy Reiterations are listed by date on the “Major Buy Reiterations By Date” page (see the “Major Reiterations” link from the menu bar). Their performance from the date of the reiteration is tracked on that page. Their complete performance history from the date of the initial recommendation can be accessed by clicking on the names/symbols of the reiterations listed.
Tracking Overall Performance - The performance scoreboards (accessed from the home page) calculate the overall % gain/loss of all new recommendations made within their designated time periods.. Major Buy Reiterations are not considered new recommendations & are not included in scoreboard calculations. However, the performance of each reiteration is calculated from the date of the reiteration & is shown on the “Major Buy Reiteration by Date” page.
The “Cramer Effect” - The scoreboards also separately calculate the overall % gain/loss of new recommendations from the closing price the day of the recommendation to the closing price on the first day it trades. This “first day traded” calculation is also shown in the performance history of each individual stock.
Tracking Individual Stocks - Once a new recommendation is made, its performance history begins. Any subsequent comments made about the recommendation (on any segment of the show) are recorded in the performance history by date & performance is updated. The user doesn’t have to search by date of show because all comments are shown on one page. If there are no new comments, the day’s closing price is used to update performance. If the sale of a recommendation is made on the show, its history ends, but the “trade” & its performance is archived & can always be accessed. If a stock is re-recommended, it is considered a new recommendation & a new performance history starts. All prior “trades” for that stock can be seen by clicking on the "See All Buys & Sells for This Stock" at the bottom of the Comment History.
Accessing the Performance History of Individual Stocks -- The performance history of each recommendation can be accessed by clicking on the name/symbol of a stock anywhere it appears on the site or from the update emails we send. The Search Recommendations box can also be used from many pages on the site. The user can search by symbol, keyword, or company name. For example, if you want to see if any solar energy stocks have been recommended, use keyword “solar”; to find Japanese stocks, use keyword “Japan”.
Research Note: There is a link below the performance history of each stock to “See All Recommendations in this Sector/Industry”. This could be a way to see favorable “pin action” in a group of “cohorts”. Below that is a link to Big Charts that will take the user directly to interactive charting, SEC filings, insider transactions, analyst ratings & other information provided by the Dow Jones MarketWatch service.
